Teaching Rules in Kindergarten

I like to introduce the word "rules" to the children with this quick video. Every time we hear the word rules, we put a thumbs up.  Following the video, I like to create a quick list of rules for a fun activity.  An example-  using bean bags.  Write a list of rules and see how well the children can follow them.  To summarize the activity, the children can state the school rules or talk about why we have rules at school.

Florida teachers!  This is one of the domains on your FLKRS checklist!  Take this time to observe if children know the school rules.

Here is another activity to do as a follow up lesson.  The children can trace the word rules and  draw a picture of how they follow school rules.

Kindergarten art

This would be so pretty in a frame on your desk, bookshelf or to post on your white board to welcome your new group of little learners!

The font is from Lettering Delights, and is called Summer Delight.  There are so many fun and whimsical designs to choose from!  If you sign up for their newsletter (there is one JUST for teachers), you can get a set of free fonts and clipart.

Back-to-School Books Blog Hop

TIFFANI
Today I'm linking up with Tiffani from Time 4 Kindergarten.  One of my favorite read alouds for the first week of school is The Rat and The Tiger by Keiko Kasza.
This is a sweet story about two friends getting along and taking turns.  The characters act exactly like kindergarten children.  There is a big turning point in the story while the friends are building with blocks.  To respond to the story and extend the lesson on being a good friend, I like to partner up the children and let them play with blocks.  Here are some ideas from Dr. Jean to give some structure to block playtime.  Florida kindergarten teachers-  you can use this time to start your FLKRS Checklist.  Many of the indicators can be observed during this play time.

I like to end the activity by calling the children back together on the carpet and creating an anchor chart for friendship.  Some ideas for a chart are "Looks like/ Sounds like", "A good friend can", "What friends do together".  Display the chart for the next few weeks as a reminder to the children on being a good friend.

I can't wait to see all the ideas and books others have to share for the first week of school!

A Glog for my blog!

I came across GlogsterEdu on Pinterest and thought it would be a great way to introduce yourself to your class and parents.  At school you can project your Glog onto the whiteboard so your new students can take turns clicking the links and photos you post of yourself.  Keep it displayed during open-house...  keep your parents busy viewing your Glog while they are waiting to talk to you!  It's so fun to design the background and page AND it's totally free to teachers!
